MADELEINE
HARRIS

Hey there! I’m a graphic designer based out of Melbourne.

I love typography, branding, and animation.

1.  Experimental Typeface Design

    2025

  •     University Assignment
Maxwell’s Demon, A functional display typeface composed of hand-cut letterforms reconfigured into typographic iterations that progressively depart from legibility. Iteration 03 undergoes a digital decay with letters eroding and reorganising themselves through a reaction/diffusion algorithm.

This is a typographic experiment that investigates the intersections between typography, referentiality and reproduction through a process-driven methodology, transforming type from a medium of referentiality, reproduction and legibility into one of abstraction and iconoclasm.

What happens when typography no longer serves as a linear carrier of meaning? Drawing on ideas of simulacra, dematerialisation and entropy, Maxwell’s Demon explores how type might subvert its role as sign.

The outcome is a functional display typeface titled Maxwell’s Demon, a homage to the thermodynamic thought experiment. Like its namesake, the typeface tests the threshold between chaos and order.

2. Type Specimen

   2025

   University Assignment

   Publication Design

Type Specimen for PlainForm’s display typeface, Ready

A bifold booklet showcasing Plainform’s typeface. A double-sided poster accompanies the booklet with a quote by Henri Micheaux that reads,

“The mere ambition to write a poem is enough to kill it.”

Ready blurs the line between abstraction and legibility, tipping over into pure shapes.

3. Album Cover for Jimmy the Saint and the Sinners

   2023

   Commissioned Freelance

Custom typography, illustration, art direction and logo design. Hand-cut linoleum printed illustration features recurring motifs throughout the album.

4. Branding, Logo Design

   2024

   University Assignment
Situated on the VCA campus, a stone’s throw from the NGV, Little Black Coffee Shop is a meeting place for creatives of all kinds. A distinct rebrand featuring a Little Black Sheep mascot sets the cafe apart from its competitors. The result is a flexible branding system that enhances wayfinding and assists with placemaking within the VCA community.

 5. Wayfinding

    2024

    University Assignment
The State Library of Victoria is the heart of Melbourne. It’s a crossroads and a quiet witness to the spectrum of stories unfolding every day.

This wayfinding concept draws inspiration from bookmarks, marking something you want to return to or remember.

The system is designed to be flexible, with a magnetic mechanism allowing white panels to be flipped or switched in accordance with current exhibits.

6. Exhibition Identity

   2025

   University Assignment

The EYE exhibit is the final event of the VCA’s Design and Production course before students graduate.

Inflated text and glass graphics are transformed using red and blue lighting.  Different faculties are colour-coded and 3D assets are lit accordingly in Blender.

A comprehensive style guide was developed so that staff and students could manipulate the design system for various applications, including banners and social media formats.
